EDUCATION NEWS

  • Legislation to limit Education Freedom Account funds for extracurricular activities and travel costs passed the House (74-9) and Senate (29-1) on Wednesday and now goes to the governor’s desk. The bill applies to both private school and home school families and requires funds to be spent mainly on education while allowing extra money for co-curricular courses at public schools.  Northwest Arkansas Democrat-Gazette

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Gov. Sarah Huckabee Sanders signed a bill on Wednesday — that bans prescription drug middlemen from owning pharmacies in Arkansas — despite opposition from CVS.  Northwest Arkansas Democrat-Gazette
  • Cities and counties in Northwest Arkansas are working together on a plan to manage growth as DPZ CoDesign begins its early-stage report, expected by the first quarter. Rogers officials and community leaders say updating zoning laws for mixed-use development and greenspace is key to handling a region that may reach 1 million residents by 2050—public engagement on the plan is expected later this year.  Arkansas Democrat-Gazette
  • The Arkansas 95th General Assembly ended its active session after 94 days in Little Rock—passing hundreds of bills and a $6.5 billion spending plan that sets aside $2.5 billion for education. Lawmakers blocked a $750 million request for a new prison in Franklin County—and they expect to revisit this issue in next year’s fiscal session when the legislative session will officially close on May 5.  4029 News
