ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Heavy rain disrupted the morning commute in Northwest Arkansas yesterday as officials increased staffing to prepare for flooding. At 6:04 a.m., Valerie Zhang of 40/29 reported standing water on I-49 in Fayetteville — prompting officials to advise drivers to slow down.  4029 News
  • With Labor Day weekend near and rising water levels forcing several Beaver Lake beaches to close, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers warned local visitors to wear life jackets since hidden hazards like tree limbs may be in the water—prompting extra caution on the lake. Public safety measures include life jacket loaner stations, alcohol restrictions, and advice to stay hydrated as more rain is forecast.  5 News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Two city-owned dams in Rogers—Lake Atalanta and Lake Fayetteville—were rated 'poor condition' and 'high hazard' by the National Inventory of Dams, prompting officials to warn of potential flooding risks. Officials noted that past inspections found minor cracks and longstanding seepage at Lake Atalanta and said plans for new monitoring equipment and an updated emergency plan will be released in September.  4029 News
  • An auction of 52 tax-delinquent properties was held at the Holiday Inn and NWA Convention Center in Springdale on Aug 20, with 139 bidders buying 51 parcels for over $1.1 million. Commissioner Tommy Land said sales in Benton and Washington Counties returned funds to local tax rolls — helping keep these parcels active for the counties.  Arkansas Democrat-Gazette

  • Arkansas Children's Northwest in Springdale received a $500,000 grant from the Schmieding Foundation to help fund its $83 million expansion—this project will add 40 inpatient beds and upgrade surgical and outpatient services for better pediatric care.  Northwest Arkansas Democrat-Gazette
